Can anybody tell me the logic behind NS’s train designation numbers and what the letters stand for? For example, NS 24N. Or U55? I was really curious about the designations for autoparts trains and time freights that travel the Pokey.
I have looked all over the net and can’t find squat.

A “u” symbol on the Pokey most of the time is for a shifter out of Williamson or Bluefield.
The Kenova jobs,and some road switchers out of Portsmouth,Ohio use a “j” symbol.
Some pushers on the Pokey side I believe also use a “j” symbol.
All autorack ,and pigtrains use a number 2 (247 west 274 east )(234-218 east) and (233-217 west).
The only true autoparts train the 184,does not run on the Pokey any longer.It combines with the 274 at times.The empties are run on the 185 west.
Thanks for the info. I was curious as I want to make my train names on MS Train Simulator more true to reality. And just for general knowledge.
