The Norfolk Southern is running ads on TV touting its role in the freight transport business. The ads are very well done. What does the NS hope to achieve from them?

They are not about selling the service so I conclude they are for Public Relations/Community Relations. Of course it is difficult to impossible to determine the economic value of such efforts.

I have no access to any of the reasoning at NS about their advertising campaign…That said it seems that they are becoming very conscious of their Public Image and the preception of the Corporate Image.
UNion Pacific has for years cultivated their Public Image in Media ands and Advertising. As is born out by their Original Heritage Fleet and the Good Will generated by their High Visibility Steam Program.
An analogy might be used to explain it…Research has pointed out to the Medical Profession that Doctors who have a poor" Bedside Manner’ seem to suffer more lawsuits; as their patients tend to be as hard on the Doctors as the Doctors are on those patients.
Norfolk Southern’s current campaign, based on the former kids program of " Conjunction Junction" seems to play well for the puiblic, the yournger ones remember the catchey musiucal scores and a positive impression they created , and that transfers to a certain likability leven in their viewing public.
That type of positive and current awareness got started a couple of years back with thier ‘Lonely Gas Can’ Commercials for their Piggyback OPerations. Hey have hooked up to a Productiuon Company for their current ads that seems to be intune with the public and their image.
I leave it to Professor Schlimm to analyze the specifics as he is far more qualified to do that than I. It is interesting how NS is directing their public image in the last several years. My guess is that the psychology is that it is beeter to be in a somewhat friendly environment, and in one where everyone
