Rumor has it that Norfolk Southern will be double-tracking a portion of it’s mainline on the Atlanta North district in North Georgia. Has anyone heard about this, or is there a source on the internet where I can verify this information?
They’re double-tracking several sections of this district including the area between Cohutta and Howardville. A majority of the double track is being created by linking the existing sidings together.

10 years ago when I lived in Atlanta there was a series of articles about the congestion on the NS lines and what was planned to address it. Sounds like they are finally getting around to it.

Interesting. I have not heard anything about this.
Thanks for the welcome, Railfan 1!
I had heard this news from a friend about the double-tracking. I do know about the work going on in Cohutta because he is from that area. One reason for the interest is that I work for a large company located trackside in Rome. It would be really cool to watch NS put in the new tracks. They really need it; a train comes through there on average every 20-30 minutes, day and night. As far as linking sidings, that’s pretty much what they would be doing on the proposed segement. Berwin is two miles south of my job, and Pinson is two miles north.
The info I got also stated that the work would be from north Rome to Oostanaula. If that is true, then it’s going to be a major upgrade - there is a highway overpass whose pylons will have to be spread out and two bridges will have to be built.
