North American Railyards

I read the book entitle “North American Railyards”. Who’s got the biggest operation yard in the country right now?

A.) Corwith Yard- Chicago, IL

B.)Hobson Yard-Liconln, Nebreska

C.)Argentine Yard-Kansas City

d.)Pasco Yard- Pasco, Washington

E.) Barstow Yard- Barstow, CA

F.)Davis Yard-Roseville, CA

My old time favorite is Enola Yard-Enola, Pennsylvania.

In terms of average number of cars processed per day, it’s UP’s Bailey Yard at North Platte, Nebraska.

Limited to the examples on your list, BNSF’s Argentine Yard at Kansas City, Kansas.

RWM

Bailey Yard’s has more than 50 classification tracks. The Guineess book of records lists the yard handling 10,000 cars each day. An Average day you see 120 trains passing through the complex.

I am not sure what a operation yard is. I want to think that you are talking about a classification yard if I am wrong let me know. The largest classification yard in North America and the world is in North Platte, NE, the Bailey Yard. owned by UP.

Yes, I am talking about classification yard. Baily Yard is the largest but what got the most carloads per day?

Bailey Yard.

You are right!!!

What number is Roseville? I know its the biggest on the west coast, but dont know how big it is compared to some other yards back east.

Davis Yard in Roseville has a design classification capacity of 1,800-2,300 cars per day. I don’t know what it is averaging at present traffic levels.

RWM

How do Elkhart, Conway, Avon, and Selkirk compare to the yards
mentioned above?

CSX says in 2006 it processed the average number of cars per day at these yards:

Avon, 1,538

Selkirk, 1,279

I don’t know what “processed” means – cars over the hump, or cars arrived and departed?

RWM

Let’s not forget Rice yard in Waycross, Ga.

Who’s runs the yard UP or BNSF?

Davis Yard in Roseville is a UP facility.

RWM

A little information on Rice Yard-Waycross, Georgia. Seabord system opened Rice Yard in 1978. The yard is the largest owned by CSX. It occupied over 850 acres and is designed to classify 2,900 cars daily. Rice Yard has its own engine house and locomotive service facility. Keep in mind is also the largest locomotive repair facility for CSX [:D]

Railway:

Keep in mind that Roseville was inherited from SP. Roseville (Davis Yard) was built in the 1950’s it has 49 classification tracks, and 21 departure roads. Because it was built in the 50’s it had a draw back>it possesed a fairly short classification track. When UP merge with SP in 1996, the Roseville Yard was selected as the key yard for Nothern California. UP Began to completely rebuild it. [8)]

RWM:

Processed means >> daily classified in the previous 24hrs. [:O]
