That’s because they’re secret. Detective Cinderdick (you remember him?), when we last heard from him, was looking for them because that’s where the boxcars with shackles are stored.
David, only if you’re lucky. Most humps (ours included) are pretty well buried in the yard, behind pretty good security.
RWM, based on the Proviso count, I’d say that those are hump totals only–unit trains, intermodal, and other run-throughs probably only add to those counts.
Considering that North Platte has two humps, we look pretty good!
I am trying to find one in Texas but there’s some much security signs posted. I am trying to take pictures for my model railroad layout. Let’s see, if they give me a break unto El Paso yard.
I was just in Roseville CA & I could not see the hump even from a overpass. I did however hear the hump master talking to the yard master on the scanner [:)]
The hump at CSX Cumberland Yard (Maryland) can readily be seen from public streets. The hump at UP Centennial Yard in Fort Worth and UP West Colton Yard in Colton, Calif., can also be seen from city streets though not quite as nicely as Cumberland. There are probably others but I apologize, I never have paid it much attention.
Although it’s pretty far from you, Allentown, Pennsylvania is one good answer to your inquiry. The hump can be seen from adjoining River Drive, less than 100 ft. southeast from the road and just a few feet below the road. You can see the approaches and the retarders as well.
It’s about 1 mile northeast of S. Carlisle St., south of the Ritterville section of East Allentown, and there’s a stone parking lot on the other side.
There are threads and and photos of this area on various Websites. It was a Trains “Hot Spot” in the early 1990’s.
Going North of the Boarder CN’s macMillan Yard just north of Toronto is one masive piece of real estate, locomotive shops , humps and classification and storage 1000-1500 cars a day and they are thinking of expanding it further. Cp’s Alyth yard and shops in Calgary are another massive facility, it even had a professional; video made of it from Pentrex.
