Northern Maine Junction

I am looking for prototype information on Northern Maine Junction for modeling purposes. It looks to me like the interchange there would be a great design element for a Maine based model railroad. Does anyone have information or photos they’d be willing to share? I’ve found lots of detailed photos but no real overview.

Thanks!

I always thought NMJ would be perfect for a model RR . You can run your trains in a couple of loops and still be prototypical. Where else can you pull your train down and stop the headend right next to the rear end ?

Northern Maine Junction is southwest of Bangor ME in the town or township of Hemon. You might try to use the satellite part of Google maps to locate Northern Maine Junction, and the track layout there to get some idea of how the tracks run.

Herman Me. actually … the tracks go everywhere in every direction. Perhaps I can find something and scan it for you if google doesn’t show you what you need . There used to be many more tracks there, what you see now is only a small fraction of the complex.

Good evening, guys. Looking at current photos of the interchange and yards it makes sense that there would have been more. Even given the turning loops the layout doesn’t make a lot of sense without elements that are missing. The google maps photo show the shadow of what appears to be an intact coaling tower. I live in Bath, ME - a couple of hours away. I’ll go look sometime soon.

What I’m really interested in is any literature or history of how it worked and what went which way there. I’m considering using is as the centerpiece of an n scale layout based on maine i’m considering. In my world, MEC is alive and well, maybe purchased back from PanAm by a new investor.

There are two coal towers at NMJ actually . At one time they were connected together with conveyors over the track.

There was a large interlocking tower at NMJ as well to control the BAR traffic from the North, in fact the top end switch is still called the tower switch.

There are a few intact coal towers here , a couple the still have most of the mechanism. The best example is at Derby Me just an hour NW of Bangor. The Millinocket tower is also mostly intact as well as the ashpit and a portion of the roundhouse. OF course the turntable is still operational .
