Northlander train linking Toronto to Timmins set for relaunch in 2026

The provincially owned Northlander train between Toronto and northern Ontario is set to make a comeback.

Operated by the provincially owned Ontario Northland Railway, the train service was discontinued in 2012 and replaced with buses. But it’s set to relaunch in 2026 with expanded service and new trains.

I remember the outcry when the Northlander was cancelled in 2012. Lots of calls to get it going again. Good to see the province has figured this out. Sixteen stops with fully accessible trains with a lot of amenities.

Good summary of the history here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northlander

I enjoyed riding the Northlander in 1983 from Toronto to North Bay, Ont. and seeing for myself the role this train and others like it play in helping Canada and Canadians in many ways. I wish this new iteration every success; to that end I’d like to make a suggestion that I know will never be acted upon: This train needs a VistaDome car. If it had one, the train would be even more popular and attract a much wider ridership.
