Not a Happy Camper about P2K

I’ve been living with my in-laws since we came back to California after I graduated from MSU, so yesterday I pulled out from my storage some snap track and a transformer to test some of my new engines, and also to make my 21 month old son fascinated about trains.

I started with my RTR Athearn GP60M BNSF. Not bad for a RTR–A little loud and slow. I can fix that.

Next came my three Atlas DASH 8-40CWs: Perfect as expected.

Last came my two prize P2K GEEPs, the two that I’m basing my 4x8 layout around. First off was my GP30. At first it didn’t want to move, then it did, but it made a clicking noise (I’m then getting frustrated). THEN, I try my GP38-2: the sucker didn’t even move. I hit reverse and then it moved. (Now I’m pissed) It only ran backwards.

My other P2Ks had no problems ever—some of my best engines. Now I have to do some maintenance on two brand new engines that really shouldn’t have to be. I blame myself because I bought them from two hobby shops on the east coast, and I didn’t ask them to test-run them first. I got to stop having high expectations

Ever have days like this?

Your GP30 probably has the cracked axle gear syndrome. Have no idea why the GP38-2 only runs in one direction. All three of mine run great.

Well, this weekend I’ll be taking them apart and doing some surgary. I’m just upset becsause I love my P2K SD60Ms that I have never had problems with, and now I bought two more P2Ks and these both have major problems. Hopefully they’re a quick fix.

Your frustration is understandable but one thing to remember:

A lot of “brand new” P2K locomotives sit on store shelves for years. Inspite of being boxed up, some plastic components “dry rot”. Many 1st and some 2nd run P2K locomotives had minor problems relating to this. Life Like made improvements afterwards.

I purchase a brand new P2K GP9 a year ago. I had to replace every axle. Afterwards it ran fine.

P2Ks with the Athearn BB clone motors are not in the same league as Atlas and Kato, mechanically, however they’re excellent “bangs-for-the-bucks” units.
