Not sure if youve seen this on ebay yet but come October you can not accept/pay via check or money order

I was just reading a message I got back on 20 August that starting in October the only way someone can pay for a item your selling is via credit/debit card or bank transfer thru paypal or another electronic company.

Not sure I like that as a lot of my sales where thru money orders this means I have to pay ebay fees to sell and then pay ebay or someone else ( as ebay ownes paypal) to get my money for selling this item.

BY ther way heres the message

We’re taking steps to give sellers the most dynamic marketplace on the Internet: reduced upfront cost, optimized exposure, and a more consistent buyer experience to drive more sales.
1. Your Auction-style listings with a low start price are still the best deal on eBay – no change in Auction-style fees!

Plus, we’re introducing a new 35¢ Insertion Fee for Fixed Price listings-regardless of the asking price or number of items in the listing-with a 30-day duration and automatic renewal option at no extra cost. For some of your items, this new Fixed Price option may be a great solution.

1. Driving more sales with a more consistent buyer experience
We’re taking other steps to ensure buyers keep coming back to eBay:

- Limits on shipping and handling charges
- Big seller rewards for free shipping, including free subtitle, a boost in search results, and double PowerSeller fee discounts
- No more checks and money orders
- New seller standards: Minimum 4.3 on all DSRs

1. More relevant search results to drive

rtraincollector,

I dont sell on ebay, but I do buy on Ebay…when i read this…it makes me think of what it all boils down to…GREED! Twist my stomach…these big compnies get some cash and then try and force their will on you…well if you dont accept bank debit cards… u cant sell here…greed greed greed…

ANY E-MAIL received by me from E-Bay or PayPal is forwarded to spoof@paypal.com or spoof@ebay.com . They WILL reply in hours telling you if it was from them or “e-mail phishing”, they want this feed back.

Just like a received Phone Call, don’t give out personal information to an unknown person. Allways go to your account, not through E-Mail, and sign in, then check your E-Bay Messages.

This is in your messages in your account part of ebay its from ebay telling you of rules and policeys changes it didn’t come thru my private email

Although I’ve purchased more than 40 O gauge items using cashier’s checks, I finally got burned a couple of months ago to the tune of $258. Another buyer bought from the same seller using his credit card. When the item never showed, he complained because the seller wouldnt release the charge so his credit card could be reimbursed. From now on, paypal for me. All it takes is one dishonest person…

This was brought up on another message board. It was also stated paypal is raising its fees. With all the fees involved, it makes you wonder if listing a $20 boxcar is worth the trouble. The last ebay purchase for me was two $20 MPC cars. Combined shipping and handling was $13. I’ve done better at local shows but with ebay, I can find practically anything I want at a reasonable price within a month or so.

One nice thing, no more outrageous shipping fees. I’ve seen some of those auctions and a guy could easily get burned if his trigger finger gets the best of him.

I think ebay should also curtail the guys who give a vauge, single line description then blast you with 10 paragraphs of hard #### terms with all kinds of threats. They should also put those live auctions with a 17% buyers premium in a different section so we don’t have to tread through them when they list a ton of items.

john they have saaid before they weren’t going to allow high shipping I even reported some they haven’t done a thing so I don’t believe them now on the shipping charges there still going to allow overcharges on it no matter what.

I’m not happy with the proposed change. The items that I sold on Ebay in the past were paid for using money orders. That seemed to work very well for me.

I would guess the change is aimed at getting more revenue for Ebay through the PayPal fees.[|(]

Hey - I read on another forum that they will only allow $3 shipping on dvds and about the paypal only policy. Interesting!

As buyers, my wife and I always prefer to pay with paypal. We normally use our credit card, as I feel it gives us a little more security. Also appreciate the faster shipment we get from paypal and the fact that we don’t have to hassle with money orders.

As an occasional seller, my preference is also paypal. I like the fact that I usually get payment the same day the auction closes, and the fact that I don’t have to worry about phony money orders or bouncing checks.

I am not a seller, but PP is the only way I will buy. for me no PP, no bid. There are a lot more honest people than bad but I would get the bad one. as for shipping I think we all know how much is fair and a little extra for packing and a trip to the post office is also fair, but again there are those that pad their sale profit with high shipping to avoid fees.

Every thing I’ve bought on e-bay I paid for with personal check. Of course I never bought any trains on ebay…[:D]. I’m not going to use credit cards or get pay pal. So my e-bay shopping days are over…

Can anyone recommend an alternative to E-bay for a buyer?

Paypal definitely has its advantages, but the fees can be a bit steep. Paypal is the only way I will accept payment from overseas bidders.

It will be interesting to see if this new policy will apply to gunbroker. com (ebay owns gunbroker too).

I’ve been using Ebay since my start in 0 gauge, simply because there are few other options left for anyone overseas. From the first start I found that paypal worked fine for me. It gives (some) security, it’s fast and a lot cheaper then a money order, which is the only option since we don’t have checks anymore in Europe.

A money order to the USA costs about $45 on transaction fees, so even if paypal would cost a few $, I wouldn’t mind to pay that too. The formula with ebay as actionneer and paypal as payment option is a very atractive one for global trade, since it’s fast and safe.

On the german ebay I mostly pay with a money order, which is free within Europe, because only a few people have paypal as payment option. It’s always a small gamble though, because money back if the item doesn’t show up or is damaged is out of the question.

Obviously someone buying an item is interested more about the safety and guarantee of a good sale and doesn’t care too much about the few $ a seller needs to pay, on the other hand the seller wants to have as much profit as possible and doesn’t care too much about the feeling of safety the buyer “needs”.

But in an environment where buyer and seller don’t know eachother, don’t see eachother and likely never hear from eachother again, there need to be decent control on payment, shipping costs and honesty. In my opinion, Ebay combined with Paypal offers that security.

Besides, what is wrong with offering the paypal option at buyers cost?

Count me in as a PayPal fan too. With PayPal, I’ve bid (and won) on stuff from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, China, India, and Italy. Wouldn’t have dreamt of doing that with money orders, checks, or for that matter, a credit card.

I’ve been around Ebay since the days before Paypal-when MOs or checks were a fact of life for every transaction.

I like Paypal in many ways, however I don’t like the ever-increasing chunk of change that they take out of every transaction. Plus the fact that Ebay and Paypal are one in the same, so really they’re double-dipping into your money.

Interestingly enough, I just sold something over the weekend, and the buyer elected to use the MO option. It’s been several years since I’ve had someone pay that way.

By the way, I’ll still continue to offer both Paypal and MO/Check on all of my auctions for as long as allowed to. There are far too many potential “paypal only” or “MO/check only” bidders out there to not. Even if they end up winning the item, their bid still brings up the price, and they would be very unlikely to bid if you didn’t allow them to pay in a way that suited them.

I did not know Ebay owned Gunbroker.com too. I think they are getting little too big. Years ago when I was only buying on Ebay I used to complain that Ebay was only standing behind the sellers because thats where their money comes from. Now it appears they have came around the other way and are support the buyers more. There are a couple things wrong with not allowing money order payments. Number one is they seem to be only concerned about getting their fees that they get on Paypal sales. Number two, paypal can come back to burn the sellers. Too many times I have heard where a buyer overseas claimed he did not receive something, or simply had buyers remorse and Paypal refunded their money without even questioning the seller! Overseas buyers do not usually want to pay the high prices for shipping that insured shipping requires. So you try to help them out by sending something first class mail and it gets lost. Guess what? You loose 2 times! You lost the item and will loose the money because Paypal will take it back from your account. Money orders were the only way to protect yourself from dishonest buyers or packages lost in the mail.

I have always told my buyers that I WILL NOT be responsbile for lost items in the mail. Well, if they paid by Paypal they will take the money back from me anyway and Im out. I don’t like Paypal with their excessive fees. When I sold slot cars every 5 th one I literally gave away for free because of the Ebay and Paypal fees. There must be a better way!
