My new November issue of TRAINS arrived in my mailbox on Saturday and I read it cover to cover while railfanning at Eola on Saturday and Sunday. I found several articles very interesting, in particular those related to the UP SD90MAC units, the Sunset Route expansion, the MRL Gas Trains, the Powder River “dust issue” resolution question, the BNSF RoadRailer de/re-railing story, and also the very good “Railroad Reading” section (in particular the story of the Northwest Amtrak baggage handler who nearly had a disaster on his hands back in the 1980’s). All in all an exceptionally good issue…WELL DONE TRAINS STAFF!!!

EXCELENT ISSUE!
Should be pretty much something for everyone…
An issue hard to put down!
Sounds very interesting - can’t wait to get mine!
I refuse to use that misspelled “ditto” sign, but I’m with the schemer–can’t wait for mine to arrive. Will march on the post office this afternoon if it’s not there.
Does the feature article say when the Colton-El Paso line will be all double track?
I havent read it yet, but Fred Frailey is doing another of his in depth reports, so it should be great.

Indeed, it was a very good article. The piece on the restored Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington was very interesting! I wish those folks the best in completely restoring that ROW.
There is a schematic of the line from West Colton to El Paso showing recent and scheduled expansion up to 2010. Looks like a few small single track sections left after that time.
Thanks. I wonder if the Sunset Limited will run a little faster after that.
The “gallery” photos were most worthy of the title.
Yes, a most excellent issue!
Funny you should mention the Sunset Limited, as there is a piece in the mag on Amtrak considering ending the train.
I thought the roadrailer derailment / rerailment [is that a word] article was worth the price of admission all by itself, the rest is just a nice bonus. That’s the kind of analytical article I like.

I have to agree that the November issue has a great mix of articles. For those interested in railroad capacity expansion projects, there is Frailey’s in depth article on the Sunset and Matt Van Hattem adds two pages on the third and fourth main being added to the Powder River Basin Joint Line.
