Now wait a minute, I thought the Wisconsin Central was gone?

I thought that CN or CP or some railroad bought out WC??? I really dont know much about the WC so if anyone can fill me in, That would be great!

CN bought out the WC a couple of years ago.

Bert

2001 to be exact.

ok, well im seeing pictures of gray CN locos with WC painted under the #'s. im confused about that?

Those units are commonly refered to as “Greybeards”. They are units that are most often used in WC territory, on WC’s E-Rail all rail taconite trains. They are former Alstom units I believe. As for the WC marks, I think It was just a way to differentiate the units.

Wisconsin Central still exists as a subsidiary of CN. At some point CN will rationalize its US subsidiaries, but for the moment it is to their advantage to keep them separate. Think work rules and contracts.

saw wc unit 6004(in wc paint) northbound at deshler on sunday.

They are GCFX pieces of junk SD-40-3’s The only good thing about them is, at least they have microwaves and refridgerators.

Can still see the Algoma Central Paint in between the outside and inside windows

CN units from Illinois Central are still lettered IC under the cab.

And also for US tax purposes. This is one of the main reasons NS has kept subsidiaries of railroad names that haven’t existed otherwise for over 40+ years. Then there are still craft unions that even refer to themselves as working for the Central of GA RR. That RR disappeared under the Southern banner back in the 1960s’!

I don’t foresee CN eliminating their own “appendages” any time soon for the reasons listed above.

CN has to have a single US subsidiary, but it doesn’t have to have more than one. NS has simplified their corporation structure somewhat, a few subsidiaries have disappeared, some have to remain for other than tax reasons (CNO&TP for example)
