NRE 3GS21B Consisted

I was watching the Folkston Web cam and at about 12:30 AM I saw a CSX train roll through heading north, looked like it was lead by a couple AC4400 and in third spot was what looked like a 3GS21B. With it being dark and the refresh rate of the cam I did not get the number. This would not be used for main line use would it? Or was being towed back to Waycross?

As a general rule, gensets are used in yard, transfer and other terminal service. Some may be in use on local freights on the shortlines that roster them. What you saw was probably dead in tow.

Most likely headed to Waycross for it’s required 92 day maintenance inspection.

The inspection/serivce makes sense… I saw another switcher over the weekend in tow.

Why not?

Those little buggers can pull, the BNSF pulls out of North Yard with a MU’ed set and 90 cars all the time.

Its what, 2300 HP added to the consist?

If you need to fill out the HP per ton ratio, why not?

The run at track speed, so what would be the problem using one to fill in…
