The Pea Ridge National Battlefield is also well worth a visit. The NRHS has things planned all around it, but apparently does not think a major Civil War site should be included. Part of the visitors’ center display, which was done many years ago, gives “reasons for the Civil War.” Many of them, such as states rights, are still being talked about today.
If it’s “states’ rights” then shouldn’t it be “The War Between the States”?
Can’t we all just get along? This is supposed to be a nice hobby.
To be completely correct, the site is officially called Pea Ridge National Military Park. The National Park Service claims that is the most intact of all US battlefields.
Seriously, do we have to go through “Civil War/War Between The States Arguments” here. Goodness, let’s try and enjoy the program for a “RAILWAY” convention.

If you look at the area, there are hundreds of attractions that we haven’t included. We didn’t include the battlefield at Prairie Grove either as this is primarily a rail convention. Just as we have done for the past few years, we are making info about many of the local attractions available to those who attend so they can choose what they want to do outside the core activities of the convention. Over the years I’ve hiked every trail and followed every military movement on and off Elk Horn Tavern (what most of those who fought there called it), including the trenches along what is today the A&M. However, we didn’t feel that it should be a core convention activity - hey, we can’t even cover all of the rail attractions in the area. However, the convention guide book does have quite a bit of information about the battlefield since two trips go through part of it.
I think directions given to each volunteer car captain/host should include permission to toss from any moving convention train anyone who thinks they are going to refight the battle their great, great grandpappies fought in. As a historian myself, I love to walk Civil War battlefields, but this trip will be about trains!!!
