Question: The remnants of a bridge structure just to the right of the Rockville Bridge are from a former Pennsy bridge that predates the stone bridge or is it possibly remnants of the remains of the construction of the south Penn bridge…?
Those piers are from the first ‘two’ Rockville Bridges…The present stone arch bridge is the third bridge…built in 1902.
The original bridge, built around 1854 or so was made of wood…a second bridge was built of iron on the same piers…Then the stone arch bridge was built on a different alignment from the originals.
…I assume then, the South Penn RR bridge building location, must have been in a slightly different location.
The South Penn Bridge location was several miles to the South at Harrisburg…
