me and my daughter were down by the tracks yesterday seen a train come by it was a NS leading aBNSF didnt seem to fit has any one else seen that?
Where are you located… it could be that one or the other companies had leased an engine, or an engine that was bought by one or the other.
Locomotives are often pooled. You can see UP and BNSF in the East, as well as CSX and NS in the West. When I was in Tucson, AZ, I often saw Union Pacific freights with NS locomotives in the consist. Here in Massachusetts, I often see UP and BNSF in the NS drags.
I have seen a lot of NS motive power lashed up with BNSF locomotives here in Sacramento lately. I guess they need the help!
I live near the Phila. Area about 20 miles west of there
A lot of BNSF power finds it’s way east on NS. Check out “Railpace” magazine and see how commonplace this has become.
Where I am, we have a saying that BNSF stands for “Buy Norfolk Southern First” . Could this be a psychic vision. lol…
Here in Atlanta Texas I see UP/NS consist dailey as well as CSX/UP, and BNSF running alone, they have trackage rights. It is not uncommon to see this.
NS and BNSF apparently have a run-through agreement, since I have seen lashups of both on trackage belonging to both that is at least a thousand miles from the probable interchange between them. CN locos also show up in the mix on a regular basis.
Here in South Carolina, I see BNSF and CSX on the mainline to Charleston, my father-in-law recently retired from NS and said in passing it wouldn’t surprise him that we will have “Thoroughbred Pumpkins” real soon.
Here in Gainesville, GA, I regularly see NS, BNSF, UP, (former) Conrail, CSX, and occasional lease units on the NS line. On the CSX line I often see CSX, UP, (former) Conrail, NS, and numerous lease units. Seems the RR’s today are doing a lot more equipment pooling than they used to just a couple years ago.

I’ve seen all UP consists on BNSF trackage outside of Galesburg, IL. A friend of mine that is an engineer for BNSF said its pretty common for it to happen.
