I know that Nofolk Southern and CSX both accquired Corail a while ago, but what will become of Conrail’s locomotives? Will they keep Conrail paint with CSX/NS sub-lettering? What sections of track will CSX get and same with NS? What’s going on here?
The Railroad has already been divided amongst NS and CSX…as well as Engines…Don’t know if all the Conrail Locomotives have been repainted but probably most of them have…Some to each Co. The new owners of the Conrail property have been in operation of their sections for some time now.
Main line down through Indiana…from the northeast, Muncie, Indianapolis etc. was NYC then Conrail and now CSX. Main line through Pennsylvania…Pittsburgh, Johnstown, Harrisburg etc…was Pennsyhlvania RR and now NS…These are just samples of some of the changes.

To simplify an explanation of trackage, imagine an “X” crossing at Cleveland, Ohio. The lines eastward through Ohio, Pennsylvania, roughly equivilant to the former PRR went to NS. Those ofthe former NYC along Lake Erie to Buffalo and south along both sides of the Hudson River went to CSXT. Westward from Cleveland, the former NYC to Chicago went to NS and the former PRR to CSXT. Also, the former Erie trackage known as the Southern Tier went to NS. Roughly, 58% to NS and 42% to CSXT. The same percentages were applied to equipment, both cars and locomotives with some individual tweeking here and there. On NS, locomotives are repainted in the NS scheme as their overhauls come due. They are renumbered to fit like power already on NS as much as possible with sublettering PRR. There are still quite a few on NS that have not been repainted but all have been renumbered to avoid duplications. About three months ago, I spotted a Duke Power coal train out of Roanoke with three blue CR units on the headend and two pushing, an all unrepainted consist deep in Virginia. Hope this helps! gdc
When Conrail was split in 1999 something like
53% of the locomotives went to NS and 45% to CSX.
The other loco’s went to Conrail Shared assets which is in Jersey and Detroit. These locomotives retain their original CR numbers and paint. As for the locomotives acquired by NS and CSX, they were renumbered into the Csx and NS rosters, all of the NS engines carry PRR reporting marks under the number. I’m not sure about the Csx ones though but I think they have a different style numeral in the nummberboards, basically it’s just smaller numbers. Almost all of the locos have been renumbered althogh Conrail paint is still common. For more info check out the Conrail Technical Society’s web site.
