All this carbon speak is meaningless. How about worrying about your “visual footprint?” Norfolk Southern freight trains are covered with graffiti images of crime and decay. There is a real opportunity for a clean up contribution communities nationwide can truly appreciate.
Since water vapor is a green house gas, is NS working to reduce emission from water vapor from its engines?

Regarding Mr. Norton’s comments, if police and railroad agents focused on stopping vandals instead of hassling railfans taking pictures (as long as they aren’t trespassing on railroad property), we might get somewhere.
Every piece helps, so I applaud NS for this. Sad to say, though, unless and until we have sufficient CO2 capture in place, a lot of the coal NS transports to end users will still become a major greenhouse gas contributor. Hey, hold on! I’m from PA, so I’m not insensitive to coal’s importance to NS or other roads, to its abundance, to miner’s livelihoods, etc. I’m just stating what we all already know. The writing is on the longwall.
I thought NS cut greenhouse gas down to zero when it shut down the steam program back in '94. No more steam. No more water vapor. Talk to any real scientist to confirm that yes indeed, water vapor is the #1 greenhouse gas. So therefore, if NS is serious about this imaginary greenhouse gas problem as dreamed up by pseudo-intellectuals who have no clue as to how things work, NS will shut down the steam program.
Carbon dioxide is not a greenhouse gas causing global warming. Carbon dioxide is a gas required by plants to live. To eliminate it, all the plants would die. Of course in short order, everything would die as well. The gas is a very small portion of the air. If you filled a stadium with 10000 people, 4 of them would represent carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide does not cause global warming. If it did, then why were levels higher during the last ice age? If anything, according to the junk science, carbon dioxide levels should have been near zero during the last ice age.
As a stockholder, I applaud the effort to be better stewards. I would expect the changes they are planning have a reasonable payback and are not being done soley to combat “global warming”.
Hey Guse, how about citing some sources for your numbers? Based on your history of snipe and duck for cover, I’m not going to hold my breath. But it would be refreshing . . .
Has The NS considered electrification of some of its very heavily trafficked lines? I certainly do not want to imply that battery power for this; I mean true electrification.
Guse is correct. Water vapor by far has more impact as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. But the climate change scaremongers don’t want you to know that because the aim of their baseless claims is not, as they purport, to make a better world for all of us, but rather to use the alleged threat of CO2 as a tool to control over fossil fuels, thereby gaining still more control over you and your life.
This summer, contrary to all the dire predictions, the Arctic ice cap did not disappear or even become smaller, but rather increase significantly. Of course, you didn’t hear about that in the media because it doesn’t fit their man-made climate change template.
