NS Employment Question

Hello, I have a question that I hope can be answered here. I have been studying any information I can find on getting a job with Norfolk Southern. So far I have learned alot, but there is one thing that I can’t find info on. What age do you have to be in order to be acepted by NS into it’s conductor school in Mcdonugh, GA? One employee said that he got on when he was 17, but I’ve read on other Class 1’s websites that you have to be at least 18 years of age. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. There were, but I doubt there’s many left, those who hired out at 17 by lying about their age. I knew a couple who, when it came time to retire, had problems proving they were really old enough. Doubtful that anyone is getting through the system and getting hired at 17 today.

Okay, because by the time I would have finished their school (assuming I’ve been selected) I would have been 18 for a couple of months. I’m 16 now, but was planning to put in an application in May when I become 17. EDIT: The employee that I asked was in his early 20’s.

I wouldn’t even apply until you are 18.

Why is that? The way I see it, the worst they can say is your to young wait another year. I appreciate the replies so far, thanks!

While not completely made illegal by the original Federal Law, certain State Laws may make it illegal where NS operates, and the more restrictive covenant will prevail. Some carriers are simply so confused by the various Child Labor Laws, they simply restrict hiring to 18 years of age to be on the safe side.

Most, if not all States prohibit anyone under the age of 18 to work in railroad operations, except in some isolated office jobs in some States. Federal Law prohibits the hiring of anyone under the age of 16 into railroad work, by specifically banning jobs in transportation, but for persons aged 16 and up, the 1938 law does not specifically ban railroading or transportation as an employer. Subsequent modifications to this law may have raised the limit to 18.

See USDOL page linked here: http://www.dol.gov/elaws/esa/flsa/docs/haznonag.asp

There is also a link to take you to listings of State laws which may be more restrictive.

No, the worst they can do is deny your application and “black-list” you. They won’t consider you until you are 18.

Okay, then I guess I will wait, thanks for the replies everyone.

Also, within one year FRA is to publish regulations under the newly enacted railroad safety bill. Included in the provisions of this Bill that was recently signed into law by President Bush is a requirement that Conductors be certified. Like Engineers who are already required to be certified under 49 CFR Part 240 (et seq.) This will mean a minimum age of 18 for all T&E positions.
