Traveling thru Chatanooga last Saturday came upon 16 green SD-40s and 1 SD-40 painted in BNSF colors. All had NS painted below each cab window and no other name. They were located in the southwest corner of NS’ Chatanooga loco complex. No unit numbers were noted however most MU cables were connected.
Probably candidates for NS’s rebuild program.
Those are among a group of 24 former FURX SD40-2’s which were picked up via National Railway Equipment in trade for retired NS units. The SD40-2’s are all of BN heritage. The units were shipped to Chattanooga to be painted and placed into service. They are not going into any of the rebuild programs right now.

And NS has been scrapping non -2 40s left and right. You should hear the high hood junkies cryin’.

adrianspeeder - this is WAY off topic but in light of your saying at the bottom of your post I thought I’d offer my favorite quote concerning same.
“Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity, or neglect.”
