Just think–if you’d mentioned this 28 hours ago, Nora could have come and shot the Noranges!

It doesn’t have to be a derailment. It could be an unloading problem of other sorts, or–given the cold temperatures we’ve had in the Midwest–a need to take extra time thawing out the loads.

Just waiting for it to thaw enough so the Mook can get out to watch them! [^]

Yea but how is it going to thaw out, Joe didn’t say exactally where he is but being its a former NYC mainline it has to be in the north -northeast, Here in Delaware it only 10 degrees if ur lucky with a wind chill about 0 deg F. Oh and one more thing - after a long absence Knox is back to the forums. Happy New Year and Hi everyone.

A couple of weeks ago there was a PRB loaded coal train that was parked in Denver for almost 3 days. Most of the time the same two engines were attached to it. I never heard what the cause of the delay was, I just assumed that the power plant that was going to get those cars had a back log or something like that.

Sorry to hear that it is so cold elsewhere in the county, they are calling for temps in the 60’s here in the Mile High City today and the rest of the week[8D] hopefully some of that will make it east.

well I heard from ns. its waiting to get to its destination. And Carl I do understand if they cut the power they are asking for frozen brakes.

Frozen brakes are one thing, but for you, Joe, and Swknox, I’m referring to the loads in the cars themselves, which will often freeze to the sides of the cars, or just adhere to the other coal. You’ll see lettering on some of the aluminum gons for “radiant thaw only” which refers to the warming required before the coal can be dumped. This extra step could take some time if the freezing is severe, and things could get backed up because of it.

Anybody know for sure if PRB producers put anti-freeze on the coal? That was common for Illinois coal shipped in the winter. Coal gons may may not need it so badly, but but unless there has been enough heat but on the car, a fair amount of coal can be making the trip back to the mine.

Hopper cars are a bigger problem. Any water on the coal from prep, rain or whatever
makes its way into the hoppers and after running a couple hundred miles at 20 degrees or lower, that block in the hopper has the consistency of granite.

The antifreeze solution is sprayed on the coal during the loading process. It doesn’t stop water from freezing, but messes up the ice crystals weakening the bond.

Carl is probably correct on the reason for the train being parked. Cars are probably sitting somewhat longer in the thaw shed slowing the unloading. That’s one reason power plants will up the surge pile as winter approaches.

Joe - it is slightly warmer here, so you can release them now…

the train is gone from the siding. will be on its way back soon.

Trains can wait longer than that with out derailment. There could be hundreds of reasons it there.

The power plant could have told the NS they were not ready for the train. We do the same thing on BNSF for trains connecting at Chicago with the CN, NS & CSX we tie them down on the Mendota sub quite often when they can not handle the train. As for the brakes freezing no big deal once the train get moving they will realaese the thing that the relief crew is most often has to deal with is a dead etd. It could be alot of reasons that the train sat that long.

Why are topics from January 2005 being brought back up out of the archives to appear like they were just posted…

Dave
i’m not sure. might be bergie tweaking the system(see the diner thread).was up that way today and saw a powder river empty going west with 2 bnsfs on the point. no frozen brakes today.

No, what I meant is that someone is going back into the archives for topics from last January and then replying, to bring them back to the top…The topics then appear at first glance to be a current event, until one sees that they are responding to something that happened a year ago…The topic from Nora about hiring on with NS…I started scrolling through the replies and wondered how there was already a reply from me on it , until I read the date as January 2005
