NS Line East of Louisville

As a kid, I went each summer to visit my grandfather who lived in Shelbyville KY, a small town about 30 mi east of Louisville KY. Two freight lines ran through town – an L&N line on the north side and a Southern line on the south side. My grandfather’s street ended at the Southern line, and I used to run down many times a day to watch the trains there.

Now I have a 3 1/2 year old who also crazy about trains, and I will get a chance for a brief visit & to swing by Grandpa’s house (he, alas, is long gone) for the first time in many, many years. Does anyone know what the frequency (or better yet theapproximate times) of freights on this line on a weekday (I’ll be there Columbus Day – do such holidays have an effect on freight)?

Thanks for any help

I will tell you to always expect a train at any time. There is no set schedule on when one may go through. They run anytime, everyday, 24 hours. About the only time I do not see rail traffic is Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I do know that CSX (L&N Line) does not have that much traffic on that line. I was told that they are selling that line to R.J. Corman. CSX has a crossover with the NS also in town. Last I heard it was protected by a gate. The line was the old Bloomfield Branch that is now an industrial spur. The length of the spur is about a mile. The original line was about 50 miles and was abandoned in 1952. I was told that when NS trains go through the crossover that they refer to it still as L&N, stating they have clearance through the gate.

I won’t bore you with anymore. Just have a good time with your child. Be careful. And cherish every moment you can with him/her.

Many thanks – the details are the exact opposite of boring!!![:)]

R J Corman takes over the CSX line through Shelbyville on October 1st. Check out the Yahoo Group Kentucky Railfan for more information about NS’s line between Louisville and Danville.

There are 17 mainline NS trains scheduled on Monday’s thru Shelbyville.
