Hi
Iijust read about NS having trackage rights over Guilford Rail Systems
I think I remember from reading that it used GRS to access maine .But I was wondering when these trackage rights were attained and what else does NS own or have trackage rights over in order to reach Mechanicville where GRS’s system ends
Thanx
Alex
I don’t know for sure, but my guess is they run up the D&H from Binghamton in order to avoid CSX’s former NYC trackage. Or, maybe I’m wrong.
that sounds right
And thanx
CP RAIL owns the track from Binghamton to Mechanicville, maybe a lease agreement?
hmmmmmIt would taake alot of trackage rights for NS to run from rochester to meachanicville Lets see D&H & CSX Probably inderect

If it’s a routing from somewhere west of Cleveland, traffic probably goes to Buffalo over the old Nickel Plate, east to Binghamton over Erie/E-L’s Southern Tier Line, then on up the D&H to Mechanicville. If it’s between New York and Mechanicville, it probably goes over the E-L to Binghamton, then up the D&H. But Rochester – jeez, they must have a great sales team to convince shippers to send traffic from Rochester to the B&M/Guilford gateway over such a long route, when CSX would be shorter and faster!
The only other things I can think of would be trackage rights over the NYC (CSX) to Syracuse, then down the old DL&W branch that NYS&W owns to Binghamton, then up the D&H, or following a combination of old PRR, NYC, and/or Erie branches to reach the Southern Tier, thence to the D&H. Both of those routes are so roundabout it’s scary.
Does anythink that they would be able to post a map? I’m very interested in this, because I think Norfolk Southern might be able to tie into my future layout. Thanks in advance.

I think this is helpful
What does the thick line represent on the map? Guilford, NS or CN?
D&H
Sort of off-subject, but an NS unit was sandwiched between two CSX widecab locos in Rigby Railroad Yard in South Portland, Maine, a couple of weeks ago, as Maine railfans are seeing more and more locos from CSX hauling Guilford trains - mileage eqalization, I suspect. Perhaps Guilford units are hauling NS trains over the tracks that you are talking about. - Ron Palmquist, Cape Elizabeth, Maine
A frend told me somthing about NS owning the old “Lower Road” From Brunswick to Augasta Maine. Guilford sold it a while ago but no compony that has owned it sence has made much of a profit on it.
That pretty much raps it up
As a note, NS has a haulage agreement with the Reading & Northern, between Reading and Scranton, PA. Scranton is the handoff point to the D&H/CP.

I do not remember the source, (maybe Railpace mag?) but I remember reading that Guilford was having a hard time keeping enough locomotives in running order. The article mentioned a bunch of old locos were being looked at for reconditioning and that Guilford was leasing some units too. Could the NS units be leased units? Does anyone lease out units these days besides leasing companies?
