NS reports record fourth quarter, annual results

What this article did not mention was Norfolk Southern success at conning States to pay for improvements needed for Amtrak service. you can save a lot of money by getting states like Virginia to pay for improvements for 1 measly Amtrak train between Petersburg Virginia and Norfolk Virginia that has a horrible schedule. As a Virginia resident I am NOW going to be fleeced for improvements to add Roanoke passenger service. I guess we will be helping to pay for six Universal crossovers between Roanoke and Lynchburg as between Petersburg and Suffolk.I’m sure our contributions will help to save expenses to bolster the bottom line.

Kind of like the trucking industry pushing for the building of the interstate system or the airlines coning the citys to build airports for them.

Maybe time to buy some NS stock. Then you’d be an “owner” and things might appear differently. Up over $4/share today! Of course you do have to pay capital gains taxes… On another bright side, you can always take Amtrak to Roanoke to see the 611.

BERT J ZAJAC III from Virginia, stated a perfect analysis of crony capitalism. And Amtrak will continue to have a horrible schedule because, guess who is running Amtrak? Big socialist government who answers to nobody.

As for Mel and Mo Miller, learn your ancient germanic languages before name calling. But then, name calling is to be expected from anybody who worships Amtrak and all things socialist. Why? Because when you are on the losing side of the economic reality and constitutional limits placed on big government, it’s all you have to work with. I will back down when you can show me where Amtrak is in Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution. Any farmer can read it. I assume you are able to read at the farmer level.

If we were talking about using Federal funds for improvements needed for Amtrak’s Roanoke service, we’d have the right to comment on the soundness of the decision. Since Virginia is paying for it, we should be loathed to criticize Virginians who disagree with Virginia’s decision. It is after all their money.

What’s the matter, Bert? I think you HATE passenger trains. Are you another Goosie? I’m afraid so!

For nearly a century airlines, bus and trucking companies have profited from airports, and highways funded by tax payers at the federal, state and local levels. It is long overdue for railways to enjoy similar benefits. Aside from paying for their own infrastructure, railways also paid taxes for airports and highways they never used!

Amtrak is chump change. I want to know what happened to $368MM.
