Hello! I’ve actually decided to build a Georgia-based NS HO layout, and was wondering what kind of cars the NS SD40s pull in Georgia.
Would a Norfolk Southern SD40 ever carry a Union Pacific auto carrier? I bought a HTTX flat car today, but I dunno if it matches up with NS. Do HTTX flat cars ever go to Georgia? Or is HTTX the flat car manufacturer? Sorry, I don’t know much about these things!
What other things would a Norfolk Southern locomotive haul in Georgia?
NS’s still operates SD40-2s. They are typically used in yard and local service these days and very rarely in line haul service.
In order to figure out what freight and freight cars are being hauled by the part of NS you want to model, you need to do some research. One of the best ways, and most fun is to get out on the railroad and railfan. The “stay at home” alternative is to look at pictures and videos. Here are some sources:
Look at the kinds of cars in the train. Reporting marks on them mean less than you might think as many are privately owned and can be here today and elsewhere next month.
They do have a State map of railroads[ approx 5,000 miles are claimed in State of Ga. I believe it would be sent free for the request(?); or even printed off the Internet?
The link to the Georgia Operation Lifesaver site would be a pretty good source of current information, as well. When I was liveing and working in Georgia, the trucking company I worked for, was quite active in the Ga. OLI public events. Not sure if they still operate it, but in 2000 they operated n exhibit trailer, that had been purched by a member from CONRAIL, after it was surplused out from their needs. It was driven by member companies’ drivers, and washed, and fueled as well. Roadway, Yellow, and UPS, were big suppor
