NS is cutting in the single tracking from west of Johnson to just east of Owego today…when will they start 6 foot guaging?
Was that the former Erie ROW? I looked at it on Google Earth and it appears there as very well-maintained. So why are they reducing to single track now? Insufficient business?
Back in the late '70s, when it was still the Weary Erie, and they were putting trains on the ground along the Delaware River all too frequently, I watched as they came through Sullivan County putting in all new ties and rail on the river side of the double track main.
About a year later, as they were changing it to single track, I watched them tear up the new side, not the old side.
Who knows why they do the things they do?
