With much talk in the forum about Union Pacific 844 I came to remember when Norfolk Southern ran Steam in the 1990’s. Whatever happened to the Steam freights of a decade ago? Who owns the J class Northern 611 and the Western 1218? Have these locos seen any action in the last few years? Has NS announced a running of these locos in the near future?
Dont count on NS returning to steam in the near future, if ever. After a great program for years they got out of the steam business in 1998. I’m not sure about 1218 but 611 is owned by the Virginia Transportation Museum in Roanoke and it’s on display there. There was discussion of 1218 being returned to Roanoke to be part of the O Winston Link Museum but I’ve lost track of that project. Others will have more details but I understand 1218 is a cosmetic restoration.
They now sit in Roenoke, VA. I think the VA Transportation Museum owns them. Maybe someone else can elaborate.
Yes both locomotive are in Roanoke, VA at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. They are outside in covered shelter. If I’m corect I believe the City of Roanoke actually owns the locomotives and not the museum. As for the O Winston Link Museum it is open and is the former Norfolk and Western train station.
Wow, I was right, lol. I thought the 1218 belonged to the Link museum, lol.
