NS trackage rights

Does anyone happen to know if NS excerises it’s trackage rights to DesMoine,IA? Also, does NS use the trackage it picked up from Illinois Central back in the 80’s that runs from Haleyville,AL to Centralia,IL? Thanks!!

To Des Moines, rarely. Usually rely on BNSF to haul cars into town and then are switched by a local that handles what Wabash industry remains.

NS sold the Corinth MS to Fulton KY line, which became the West Tennessee Railroad. Last year they worked out an agreement to start using the line again, which is covered here-

Thanks!!!

Hey Mudchicken a few months ago ( at least in the last year) the carrier was asking if any layed off men wanted to transfer to des, moines they just give up the previous senority , from what i heard nobody took it, I guess nobody wanted to work.

More likely they didn’t want to give up seniority rights. If Des Moines business tanks these people would be up the creek waiting for another recall.

So are there still very rare NS trains to Des Moines? I think that it would be cool to live along such a line and be able to see a dinosaur every now and then.

Not true they had no senority that is why they was laid off, they was not giving up anything other than the place they lived, and the friends they have. 2nd even if it went belly up they have the rights to move again where there was a need for others employees instead of hiring new ones.

NS has a Des Moines-based switch job. BNSF’s M-WQMDMO and M-DMOWQM trains handle both BNSF traffic and NS haulage traffic. I believe BNSF relies on NS to switch its Des Moines customers.

NS abandoned the track from Haleyville to Red Bay before 2001, according to the SPV Southern States atlas.
