Happy Holidays All
I hope your holidays are going well, and please have a safe New Year, we call that a “ROOKIE PARTIER Night” for obvious reasons, anyway, I have a question for anyone who could help, I’m building a main street in Nscale and I don’t have a scale ruler, what would be the width of a street or highway,?
Thanks for helping.
I believe an N scale street will run about 1 3/4- 1 7/8…Honestly though, grab yourself a scale ruler from your local hobby shop. They are only a couple of bucks and will be one of your best and most used tools.
N scale 3/4" = 10’ A “standard” US lane width is 12’ although they can be narrower or wider (10’ is very common). Paved parking lanes for parallel parking are typically 8’. Paved sholders 0’ to 8’ or more. An 8’ or wider paved shoulder may also be a parking lane.
So 1-1/2" (20 scale feet) two (traveled way) lanes without paved shoulders. 3" (40 scale feet) four lane without paved shoulders or two lane with 8’ paved shoulders.
Concrete sidewalks in urban areas typical 3’ to 5’ in residential areas, probably typical 8’ to 10’ in downtown commercial areas, although widths vary greatly.
Unpaved shoulders in rural areas min 1’ outside of pavement (traveled way and paved shoulders).
Here is a free online scale converter. If you know the size of anything, real world or model you can convert it to another scale. I believe that lanes are an average of 12 feet wide.

You can measure the width of any street or highway using the Measure Distance feature in Google Maps. Zoom in as far as you can go. Place the cursor where you want to start measuring and right click. A small options box pops up. Select Measure distance. (If you don’t see this option, it means you’re in Lite Mode. Click on the lightning bolt at the lower right to get into normal map mode.)
Then click on the next spot to finish measuring. You can move the little circles around if they’re not in the right spot.
