NS's bypass in Lafayette, IN

Read about this work a few years ago in trains mag, where the RR worked with the city to eliminate considerable “street running” ROW along the old Wabash.

Neither Terraserver nor mapquest have updated their available maps and photos since the time of the realignment, but looking at google satellite maps, it looks as though the new path breaks from the originial near the old classification yard south of the State st bridge, and instead follows the path of the old L&N/Monon route along the river, to near Schuyler Ave, where it breaks away and curves under US 52 to Wye into the otiginal line near Staley Mfg.

Is this correct? (anyone who knows)

Questions:

  1. Does CSX make use of the old L&N line any longer, or is that a dead route?

  2. Since the bypass wyes into the original line up on the northeast side, that means a portion of the original line running southwest from there must still be an active stubb. how far into town does this stubb remain?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks!

I’m pretty sure I have that may/2000 issue, packed away somewhere. Because I remember reading about it, …but I was living in Southern California at the time, so the locales seemed so far removed from my (then current) reality.

Living much closer now,…so I’m thinking about a “nosey nellie” road trip, just to see it in person,…and am trying to get a grasp upon how much of the historical infastructure is already gone…

The link you provided offer pix of a lot of what (evidently" is already long gone …thanks.

You could contact MP173 and you guys could hook up for some railfanning. I guess Gabe would be far to busy to join you with his new job starting. Maybe Modelcar or some other Hoosiers could join you.

O.K. now I know I’m not losing my mind. The post by nanimo73 that TheAntiGates quotes was here earlier, but it is gone now. What’s up with that?[%-)]

…That is an interesting subject re: Lafayette bypass…I remember reading about that in Trains…and I was guessing it was about 2 - 3 years ago…time really does fly. We’re headed east this coming week to do some visiting back to our {homeland} of Pennsylvania…and possibly do a bit of railfanning…maybe even over to the “Curve” as my home area is not too far away from that and we’ve been there many times. We’re transplanted Hoosiers…of about 45 years ago…but have only been to Lafayette perhaps one time and that was many years ago…

Boy, looking at the picture on the second page of that monon bygone site, showing the completed trackwork (depicting the former Monon route as being on the left) it sure looks like it is all but a dead route compared to the NS double tracks beside it.

Been outta town for a few days…road trip to Lafayette? Possibly.

What about Gabe’s new job? I missed that.

BTW…while in Lexington, Ky this last weekend, I was able to convince the lovely and talented girl friend to go for a little ride south of town. Surprizingly we ended up at Highbridge where the NS rathole crosses the Kentucky river. What a place!

That is one fine railroad, sure is a lot more interesting than Indiana railroading.
