NTSB: Engineer applied emergency brakes moments before deadly wreck

Does anyone know the what the legal track speed was just before entering the curve?

So how come ACSES wasn’t “active” on the corridor where the accident occurred?

@James Cannon - I believe that between Zoo Tower and Frankford Junction, top speed is 70 mph on the outside tracks, and 80 mph on the inside tracks. So if he was doing 106 mph when he hit the brakes, he was already well over the allowed speed limits. Why has yet to be determined …

@ David B. Peet - It seems that between New York and Washington, ACSES has been installed incrementally, in sections. Perhaps as a result of this accident, Congress will (finally) appropriate sufficient capital funding so Amtrak can get ACSES fully implemented in the corridor.
