NTSB issues recommendations for improved tank cars to carry flammable liquids
YAWN is it someone actually wanting to make improvements, or is it the usual, politicians and bureaucrats grandstanding with “HEY! Look at me!” speeches?
It is the NTSB’s responsibility to investigate accidents and make recommendations. Other agencies, including the FRA, are responsible for implementation. NTSB recommendations don’t necessarily take factors other than safety, such as economics into account. We will see if the FRA does anything with this.
You cannot make these cars perfectly rupture proof. Every accident will convene a new board to make more recommendations that cannot be carried out. NTSB is trying hard but really won’t get far. The accident rate is so incredibly small that fixing those last few accidents will be very hard.
