Number of railcars in the US & Canada

I’ve been looking all over and I can’t figure out what the approximate total number of railcars is in the US and Canada. Does anyone know the answer to this or where I might be able to find it?

Thanks,
Pete

The AAR has the 2008 figure for all North American railcars including those privately owned as 1,604,691

This includes all the major US, Canadian, and Mexican railroads, plus the leasing companies. I am not sure if those owned by the US Department of Defense are included.

As of July 31 1.53 million . This also lists the number in storage.

What’ an average railcar worth?

The questions that came to mind were, “Scrap value, used bad order, used good order, or new replacement cost?” With so many types, I would think that would be a hard question to answer.

Thinking about it, I am guessing you were wondering what the approximate value of all those 1.5 million railcars might be.
