I picked up a couple of sets of the 70-tonner HOn3 conversion half-axles. I’ve got one set installed and expect the second conversion to go more quickly now that I know all the right moves.
You end up with a very nice running little piece of motive power for an economical price, DCC included.
Someone asked me me if the 70-tonner chassis is the same as the newer version of the Bachmann 44-tonner. I didn’t know because mine are the original run with a motor in each truck. Anyone know if the new 44-tonner chassis is the same as for the 70-tonner?
I got my replacement gears yesterday and I did the replacement today. It was very easy to accomplish due to the good instructions from NWSL. The only complaint I could have about the gears is that they weren´t available earlier [;)]. The difference in performance is HUGE! It actually runs more quiet now than before, wich could be due to the fact that half of the original gears were cracked[:O]. I lubed the gears with Slick 50 lube as recommended by NWSL and it works really good so far.
Someone actually sent Dave their Shay with cracked gears for a test bed to design and evaluate what he came up with. That was the reason for the so called delay. Someone mentioned they would have liked the gears sooner. NWSL is not associated with Bachmann. That is pretty good for the new owner of the NWSL business. Dave did not have to do this.
I read a post somewhere that Dave did some extensive testing and responded much quicker than Bachmann. Yes I know, Bachmann is at a disadvantage since the locos are produced in China, though Bachmann has been replacing the loco and trucks.
Some people were given Shay’s when they sent their Climax with cracked gears back to Bachmann.
I know Dave is evaluating gears for the Spectrum Climax and ON30 Shay.
I belong to about fifteen different model railroad forums as I find you can miss a lot of information by only belonging to one or two forums.
I (and many with me) am very pleased with what NWSL have done for us model railroaders in the past and especially now.
I think we all know the backstory of the NWSL gears for the Shay by now. I also know that they were finished later than we hoped (isn´t it always so with stuff we need?). I also know that Dave “didn´t have to make them”, but a companys goodwill is very important, regardless of size. I also think NWSL wants to earn a living, I therefore believe that they will make what people wants. And finally; Yes, Dave responds quicker than a BIG China based corporation, and that is the way it should be I think and hopes.

That comment is what I was mentioning. My browser hides the smiley faces normally.
My Shay gears came today.[:D] Also in the padded bag was an entire NWSL catalog for FREE!
The gears are made of steel, so I’m positive they’ll last a LOT longer than the stock Bachmanns did (oh, wait, they didn’t last at all). Installation was a little tricky, but the gears are now on and work perfectly.[:D] I put a little bit of liquid super-glue on the back of each gear to keep them from slipping on the shafts.
