Funding sought to help restore transportation infrastructure
New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Thomas J. Madison Jr. today announced that an official request has been sent to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for emergency relief funds to assist in repairing damages on eligible highways in the State damaged by this weeks severe flooding.
“It is critical that New York State’s transportation system be fully restored to service as quickly and efficiently as possible, and NYSDOT employees are working around the clock to make that happen,” Commissioner Madison said. “Federal funding will help offset the enormous cost of repairs that are currently underway to ensure safety and re-establish mobility for the traveling public.”
Repair costs for damages to State and local highways are expected to significantly exceed $700,000, which is a threshold for eligibility for Emergency Relief Program funding. Damages have been reported in 15 counties, including Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Fulton, Greene, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Orange, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, Tioga, and Ulster.
Interstate 88 was opened Friday with a local detour on State Route 7 between Exits 9 and 10. This is a significant step in restoring traffic flow for local and regional travelers.
