NYC 2-6-0's what were they used for?

A couple of years ago I bought an IHC 2-6-0 steamer in NYC colors. Can anyone tell me what these locos were primarily used for, passenger, freight or both? I’ve seen pictures of them but none with anything behind them. Would they have ever done yard duty, was thinking of using mine for that purpose when I have a “retro session” on my small layout.

When they were originally built in the 1800’s 2-6-0’s were heavy freight engines, but the 1950’s they were more branchline or local power. They were used the same places 2-8-0’s were used but they generally had less pulling power, weight and a shorter wheelbase. Any assignment you would put a single 1000-1500 hp diesel would be a good assignment for a 2-6-0.

2-6-0 Mogul Steam Locomotives
Although the wheel arrangement was first developed in the mid-19th century, the 2-6-0 Mogul type ran on North American rails through the 1950s. After the turn of the 20th century, they still hauled light passenger and light freight consists. Their proven power even served in switching duties. Moguls were especially popular in branch line service where lighter rail and tight clearances restricted the use of larger, more modern motive power.
