NYC Caboose

At the present time, I am running a “Modern Era” caboose at the end of my NYC “Post War” train. Would you know if Lionel produced a “Post War” New York Central caboose?

I did locate “PW” cabooses but they were either SP Lionel, Unmarked or listed with other line names.

If none was produced, would you let me know which caboose would blend into the “PW” consist? My present caboose is functional but it does not look quite right with the rest of the train, As always, many thanks.

Could you elaborate a little more on what it is you are looking for? NYC started using steel sided bay window cabooses after WW2. They were originally painted oxide red but were soon swtched over to the odd “sea foam” green that went under a number of official names. The older cabooses were wood sided with a low cupola on one end. Lionel did release one of these in die cast form a while back. There were no lighning stripe or PaceMaker paint schemes. The caboose was either brown/dark red or Century/Jade/PC/NYC fade’s as soon as the sun/rain hits it green.

Chuck: What I have is the caboose that was made for the NYC Flyer set (#21…6-36553). What I am looking for is a caboose that looks like the Lionel 6357 or 6457 in color ie. a duller or darker red. Hope that this helps.

the 17600 is probably the closest you will find, assuming you can find one.

there is also a traditional steel sided one done in Century green, 6-36593

Many thanks, Chuck.

Chuck,

Do you mean Lionel never presented a Pace Maker caboose or the Central proper di dnot have a Pace Maker caboose?

Central never had one. They used the oxide red wood sided or the oxide red bay window and the later runs used the green bay window. As pretty as the lightning stripe one Lionel did or the MTH bay window, they are fantasy schemes.

I started to pass on this one but,I don’t remember PW Lionel making a NYC caboose, however current models of the “SP” type have been made and are available.

Correctomundo Chuck, the NYC had a handful of Pacemaker painted cabeese. They were built from 40’ box cars and such were longer than most Central cabooses with a low cupola. If there is more interest I will dig up more info. Lionel and MTH have painted various cabooses in the Pacemaker scheme, but are all incorrect because the correct style of caboose has not been modeled in O to my knowledge. I keep my eye out for an 2 rail version that I can change the trucks, but have only seen HO models. Frank

I have seen archive video of the Central’s PaceMaker cabeese - I believe that it was on a Mark I Video shown recently on RFD. I also have the Green Frog productions and it may have one or two shots as well. The gray / red striped was actually painted to match the break on the box cars - it was a neat effect when it was trailing some PaceMaker cars.

Interesting that they were from 40’ box cars. Thanks for the info Frank.

I’ve never seen stills of those units. The few shots of Pacemaker consists used the older oxide red wood sided units. I wasn’t aware there were any other types of NYC cabooses out there. Thanks for the update.

Sounds like a good kitbashing project Frank!

The NYC had (5) “Pacemaker” Cabooses #'s 20112,20117,20129,20132,20133. They were41’4.625" sans couplers and were converted boxcars w/ plywood sheating. As discussed they had low cupolas and were painted vermillion and grey to match the LCL Pacemaker box cars. My source is “Cabooses of the New Haven and New York Central Railroads - Caboose Data Book No. 1A” published by N.J. International Inc. It included a color drawing on the cover, a color photo, (2) b&w photos and a drawing w/ dimensions. Frank Dz

Try this to see if it’s what you’re looking for.

BTW: Merry Christmas!
