I have noticed several times that I get to see a train (due to work), that old Conrail cars are NYC on the CSX line. Now, on the NS rails they are still are painted as Conrail, and not NYC. Did the CSX and NYC combine some cars or did CSX buy them out?
It has to do with how Conrail was split up. NS and CSX created limited liability companies to recieve their new lines (PRR and NYC, respectively). CSX recieved mainly ex-NYC trackage nd the rights to the NYC’s paint schemes, logos, etc., and NS recieved mainly PRR trackage as well as the CR reporting marks and PRR schemes, logos, etc. (that’s why you see new NYC-painted models used under rights by CSX). Therefore, Conrail cars with CR marks belong to NS, and Conrail cars with NYC lettering belong to CSX.

That makes sense. I just didn’t really know how CSX got NYC. I knew that they had a buyout and NS got some Conrail and that CSX did as well. I didn’t know it was NYC. Thanks.
In 2005, NS and CSX dissolved the LLC’s that held the ex-Conrail property. After that, CSX discontinued the use of the NYC markings. NS continues to use the CR markings, much like it still uses SOU and NW.
