Anyone know why the NYC did not have crosswalk steps between their engines? How did they deal with mechanical problems in trailing units since the Engineer or Fireman could not cross between trailing units during operation?
Maybe it was thought of as a ‘safety issue’? The Milwaukee had the steps/chains on their GP9’s, and then removed them! If you needed to go back and isolate/restart an engine, the policy was to stop the train and walk back.

I been told NYC preferred the train to stop in case of mechanical problems and the engineer check the problem instead of the fireman-even if the fireman was a qualified engineer holding fireman senority in order to hold a regular job(run)…
