nyc steam locomotives

new into model trains, what is considered the best steam loco’s for the price? interested in NYC line that ran up in the Adirondacks

[#welcome] nyc steamer,

I assume you mean O gauge trains. As for price Williams or Ready Made Trains are on the low price side no control systems, Lionel and MTH are around middle of the road prices to expensive, Atlas is good but expensive. Also there is Weaver but I have had some coupler issues with Weaver Trains.

I think that Williams makes a Berkshire NYC steam locomotive.

My personal experiance thru the years is to stay away from Weaver, buy Williams locomotives but not their rolling stock, buy Lionel rolling stock, MTH rolling stock & locomotives. I try to stay away from Lionel switches and locomotives as I have had problems with Lionel in the past.[2c] Post war Lionel(from the 1940’s to 1960’s works well), but the new Lionel is questionable in my opion.

I would probably go with the MTH Consolidation 2-8-0. It’s a real beauty. I’m sure the Adirondack Line used alot of smaller steam locomotives like ten-wheelers and consolidations.

If you want to find out what NYC used for steamers go to a historical site or find a book on old steam locomotives.

I know that NYC used Bershires or Niagra steam locomotives, not sure about the Adirondack line.
