Anyone suggest safe, legal, railfan locations for viewing, in or around NYC, that are accessible by public transit?
I always enjoy checking out the Hoboken Terminal area, the station has been beautifully restored, there’s a lot of trains going in and out,and some interesting variety, if you ride some of the New Jersey transit lines like the Dover line, you go through some interesting yards. Hoboken Terminal is a very safe area and easy to reach by the Path train or NJ Transit. There is also some historic equipment kept at Hoboken, such as a GG1, you would probably need permission to view this up close.
if you can get into or near sunnyside yards
you can get Amtract and long island railroads
and many intresting cars and engines mixs

Please share the wisdom. I was in Hoboken terminal over the festive season & was totally unaware of the GG1. Where exactly is it & how does one get to see it?

The GG1 is located on the corner of Observer Hwy. and Bloomfield St. It has been their for at least 4 years.

I would definitley say Sunnyside Yard. Amtrak, LIRR…You can see a lot of differnt things down there. The main problem is SEEING it. Its a big pain to get a good view of Sunnyside, with no very good viewing areas+ NY traffic. I havent been down there in several years, when I was a kid. Sunnyside was the place though, always made my day! 
If you take the R train to 36th St. and Northern Blvd., you can walk two blocks towards the Hess Station but make a right before it. I think it’s Skillman Ave. you can walk on the street/bridge above some of the Sunnysideyards.
There’s also action shortly after the rush hours.
