NYC’s newest subway station in years opens

nice hope it stays that way

At street level, the designers have created a pleasant, landscaped vest-pocket park around the sleek station entrance between 33rd & 34th Sts., just east of 11th Ave. It shows what can be done in a crowded urban space with proper planning.

The Guardian has a nice gallery here: http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/gallery/2015/sep/14/new-york-city-gets-first-new-subway-station-in-25-years-in-pictures

Not beautiful, but they’ve done some nice things with it.

The graffittans are going to have a good time now!!

There is a major missed opportunity for an intermediate station at 10th avenue which would have served a large neighbourhood, the station shell is there but nothing to reach the surface. Yes it would have cost more but they could have saved on the design of the 11th ave. station.

HaHa…love the old financial switcheroo. Cf. the last paragraph.

Joe, You obviously haven’t been to New York in a while. When David Gunn was coaxed away from Boston to run the NYMTA, one of his first initiatives was the Clean Car program to eliminate graffiti from the system. Others had tried, but he actually succeeded. It took five years, but the graffiti was gone by May of 1989. Any car that gets tagged is pulled out of service within 24 hours. This removes much of the incentive, since the little twerps get their thrill and status from seeing their ‘tags’ travel around the system.

Graffiti in the stations gets cleaned up just as promptly, so its very rare.

Once Clean Car was underway, the Arts in Transit program was established to include art by local artists in station renovations. You never know when you’ll walk around a corner and find a huge painted tile mosaic or sculptures of bronze cartoon characters. The even have poetry and local artwork in between the ads above the car windows.

I’m going to New York tomorrow for a street festival, and l’m planning a side trip to check out the new station.
