Does anyone know if they still have the 3 SD70s? And if they dont why would they use older units instead of the newer ones??Thanx
They still own them. Apprently they are making more money by leasing them to Indiana than they would make by actually using them in revenue freight.
Instead they are running a mix of old SD45s, SD40s, a F45, and M636s on their main freight, with GP20s, GP18s and a U23B and some Dash 7s (which they essentially traded their much better Dash 8s for - again, for economic reasonss) on the rest.
It’s great fun for railfans, no so much so for rails.
Yes, the Providence & Worcester ended up with the NYSW -8s.
Thanx for the info!!
The NYS&W has an interesting fleet although they are rumored to not be the best at maintaining it, I have heard that the Alcos for the most part are almost unusable. Their newer locos are gone, but the SD70s are leased out,not like they couldn’t use them. As already pointed out, they make money on the lease deals. Biggest problem for Susie-Q is their mainline with grades that can stall trains even with bigger power, has happened on several occasions.
they are still running on the Indiana & ohio railroad(former DT&I) here in Ohio.the last i heard one of them was stationed in Delta ohio.
stay safe
