o gauge layout

new to modle trains need info. doing o gauge layout about 200 ft. in my home to start , what size transformer will i need and is it necessary to put multy power leads on the track in different locations thanks taz

The transformer’s size depends on how many trains and accessories drawing how much current, not at all on the length of the track.

How many feeders you will need depends very much on how you are joining what kind of track and what the layout configuration is. For example, a complete loop fed from one point will have one-fourth the voltage drop of the same track not in a loop and fed from one end. What are you planning?

Sounds like you will have a nice size layout. As Bob says, there are many variables involved in layout planning. I would invest in the largest transformer you can afford, with the idea that as your layout grows, your transformer will keep up with the growth, at least for awhile.

Regarding track feeders, I started out with one and then just added extra feeders where necessary. As your layout expands and ages, you will notice the trains slowing where they never did before. Running a feeder to the section where the train slows takes care of the problem and is easy to do as you go along.

Welcome dsbtaz!

Depends on what size track sections that you are using also, using 10 inch sections will require more power wires or jumpers to be placed verses using 45 or 50 inch sections. One rule that I follow is the more sections of track the more feeder wires to run. A friend of mine who lives nearby runs a feeder wire from every section of track to the bottom of the table and runs a bus wire system to power his layout with Gargraves track, to me that is overkill for power but it keeps down problems!

Read about wiring before hooking up any wires if you are new to O gauge. O gauge track is differant than H.O. track for power hookups., the outside rails if Lionel tubular are joined together for power, not so with Gragraves track as Gargraves has all rails seperate for power. Also there is two rail O gauge track!

You will get many answers for this question from many people, do what works for you!
