O Scale Antlers 2

Thanks for those whitty remarks about finding O scale antlers.

I’ve located a source for deer/elk antlers in brass from The Back Shop.

Thought I’d pass on the source, before I start the search for O scale .30-06 ammunition…

OK, that’s a new one to me, I’ve never seen a locomotive with antlers before. Now you have me curious as to your application. Are the antlers for a model of a hunting lodge, the local wildlife, or as depicted, an orniment for a locomotive?

Whatever the case, it looks like your HUNT was successful, congratulations!!![swg]

It was very common in the mid to late 19th century on the Westward Ho railways like U.P., G.N., S.F. or D&RG to see trophy antlers, bull horns, even animal skulls adorning the headlamp of a locomotive.

First time I saw Antlers on an engine was good ol’ Malcolm Furlow and his Mescale Lines (was that a play on Mescaline, BTW?) in some forgotten issue of Model Railroader (back in the good ol’ days). He did explain in that article how engineers on Western and Southern shortlines in the late 1800s would often customize their engines to match their personalities (real or imagined).

Knowing Furlow sense of humor and love of the southwest it was probably a play on Mescal, the Mexican liquor.

The replies have nailed down why antlers are seen on the “Iron Horse.” I intend to adorn an engine or two on my Barney Flats Lumber Co RR. I also plan to use them in my tavern over the bar.

I’m still looking for moose antlers or a moose head in O scale. Can’t even find a good O scale moose figure I can decapitate solely for the trophy rack!
