I have a newer O scale Atlas F unit that has a worm gear problem. Atlas was not much help in getting a replacement part for me so I though that I would try here. This is a shaft with a center worm gear, two bearings, a 22 tooth outside gear, a plastic washer and on each end of the shaft is a clip washer. This is the main setup in the middle of the truck for the motor to drive the wheels. I would like to replace the whole thing as the worm gear is stripped. Motor came loose and that was that. Lionel has something like it but not sure if I can even get that. Are there any places to get Atlas parts for repair?? Maybe even a parts brake down with part numbers??
North West Short Line (NWSL) is a great supplier of gears and such for modelers. I doubt that they would have replacements according to the Atlas part numbers, but it may be worth a shot to give them a call or send an email. They are very helpful.
You can start here: http://www.nwsl.com/
If what you wrote was true, and I have no reason to discount it, then it doesn’t speak well for Atlas.

Since you are in O scale, you might get some better answers over on the Classic Toy Train section of these forums. The folks here are mostly in HO and N scales.
Good luck,
Richard
Why would he want to go to the toy train forum when he specified 0 SCALE?
SCALE usually indicates he is of 2-rail variety, altho not always the case…however, in Atlas, it is, and this forum is the exact place to ask that question.
Just because MR caters to H0 doesn’t mean that is all there is in scale items.
Just a thought.
I’m curious what their response was - did they not answer you, or say they didn’t have the part or ??
They basically just said that they do not have that many parts. If go to their website and go to O scale they list a few misc parts mostly body parts. They have even shutdown their forum or in the process. It’s like they don’t care for you to repair your unit just buy a new one. I have not found anyplace for parts breakdowns and they don’t have any. Lionel has a unit that is almost identical to what I want but don’t know if the gears are right. Their part numbers are 610 8274 680 and 640 8521 214.
I called to ask about a replacement part for my HO RS-1 - melted the handrail while installing a DCC decoder [banghead]
They told me they were out of stock and wouldn’t be in until there was another run of the locos, expected to be early next year.
They only get parts when there’s a production run, and when they’re gone, they’re gone until the next production run.
I told them I’d keep an eye on their new product announcements and call back when I saw the models for sale again.

Hello gnmodeler, I do have an assortment of O scale worm shaft drive gears in a drawer. Some are from Atlas, MTH, and I think Williams. What I need from you are some dimensions such as; thickness, OD measured across the gears teeth, and most importantly, the bore. If you have the availability of a vernier caliper, these should be easy to obtain. If I have one, I’ll send it to you Gratis. I’m also into O and have a fair amount of spare parts from past dis-assemblies. A non-running engine is not acceptable, at least to me. e-mail me at: partsguy.bill@yahoo.com
