O/T ADM GRAIN ELAVATOR COMIN DOWN

Hey every one how are we all doin. I just found out today that the ADM grain elavator is coming down this weekend the way I found out is that they got signs up on miller parkway (43RDST) saying that the street will be closed on 4-22-23 from 7AM-7PM for something but my guess would be for the demoltion of the grain elavator. But now my question is how are going to get all of the rock and metal away from the site would they use the railroad or are going to waste money on trucking.

While I can not speak to this specific site. Today much of the materials are seperated and processed on site before transported elsewhere. Metals are seperated and cut to manageable sizes. Concrete is broken and ground back to gravel, etc., etc. Look for proccessing machine to arrive shortly after it comes down. Transporting it would be based on that which is most cost efective. [2c] As always ENJOY

and where would this ADM elevator be located?

ed

Pat (railfan619) is in Milwaukee, so I would guess there- especially with a street name of Miller Parkway.

The sign changed today saying that the weekend of 4/22-4/23 and 4/29-4/30 Miller Parkway and Burnham street will be closed from 7A.M. - 7 P.M. Im curious this weekend to watch (within safe faraway distance) to see how the will bring the remains down as you have a streets, your closing off and across from them are houses. Near the elevators are power lines.

This might be of some interest.

When Sioux Falls tried to blow up their elevator a few months ago, all it did was sink 20’ into the basement.

Nice google map! You can actually catch the Canadian Pacific Switching into the last working malt plant in this yard. Its kinda fun cause sometimes when I go to the post office around there, or to get lunch at Wendys I have caught either a pair of Union Pacifics (Their yard is south of the silos), or an old Soo line engine sitting near Wendys.

Its a shame when I was young I used to love watching 43rd street (MIller Park Way) bustling with activity of constant switching jobs back in the 80s.

I wouldn’t call this off topic! That elevator, formerly known as Krause Milling, was a railroad customer for years. It’s sad to see so many unique industries along this rail line disappear, only to be replaced by yet another piece of Suburbia, USA… Not much different from anywhere else…

A little ways to the east, and near the north end of the line behind the Masterson plant, an impressive number of rails still remain, long buried in the streets and parking lots, though the companies they served are probably long ago a memory… [:(] But I guess that’s “progress” for ya…

FWIW, the ADM elevator is near the border of Milwaukee and West Milwaukee…

Hey nanaimo73 nice map you found there I got to see alot of very intersting stuff that I never got to see. Up close but from the air it looks really cool. Thanks again.

The Zip ffed mill is 2 blocks out the front window at work. After the failure to blow it up, the demolition company spent about 3 weeks breaking it up with a wrecking ball. Then, the rebar and metals were separated. The remaining concrete chunks were ground up, and put into a pile-where they still sit 4 months later. Although this elevator is right next to the tracks too, I would bet it will leave by truck.

Guys, I don’t know how many of you are from Milwaukee but does anyone have anymore specific thoughts on this? Milwaukee used to be an industrial powerhouse but now it is turning into a big suburb of Chicago. Condos, offices, and casinos are the new ‘heavy industry’. It is really sad to see, especially when you see the former railyard/shops sight of the Milwaukee Road. My fear is that this trend will continue for many years to come.

Take some pix of it falling!

Is beer still brewed in the City ?

Just barley (sic). Seriously though, the only “old brewer” still left in Brewtown is Miller, and they’re owned by… South African Brewing??? Leinenkugel’s operates the former “new” Blatz brewery along I-43, but even that is owned by Miller. Pabst is now brewed by Miller. Schlitz and Blatz are now just pieces of the city’s history.

And how many of them ship by rail?

NONE! [banghead]

Miller does have an extensive set of tracks throughout its shipping area, but I’ll bet MILW or SOO p***ed them off enough long ago that it would take quite a bit to get them back!

Of course, now that the Tower Automotive plant on the north end of the North Milwaukee line is now shut down, maybe CP should look into leasing the line to Wisconsin & Southern – maybe they can get the suds to flow by rail again!

Umm If I remember correctly about the Miller Brewing tour, 92% of their product is shipped by truck and 8% by rail car. Sad sad sad!

Agreed though the Wisconsin and Southern would be hauling cars like mad if they owned the line. Especially since 40% of what is made up here goes to our friends down south in Chicago.

Off Topic Fun Fact: If a 50’ Box Car derailed in your backyard it would take approximatley 40-45 years for you to polish off the entire car. That is a 6-pack a day. Providing the beer ages like wine, and you dont die of ill affects of skunky beer, or alcohol poisioning. I know I know Im 23 and can polish off at least 3 6-packs of Miller if I really tried, but I prefer only one once in a while!

DON

P.S. No I was never a tour gide for Miller (Id like to though), but I have taken it enough to get 3 glasses of free beer everytime!

I assume you mean in one night.[xx(] I’ve imbibed in maybe alittle over one six-pack a couple of times back in my bachelor days, and I don’t ever want to do that again.

How would the Wisconsin and Southern do that? If CP Rail couldn’t attract them back to hauling beer on the rails, do you think a regional would have a better chance? Also, a couple of years ago there was talk that Miller in Milwaukee may even shut down. It is an older plant and I guess their operating costs are higher. I worked there for a while with an outside contractor, and heard this from the employees there. I guess it must have jus

Yup Im sorry to clarify in one night! sorry!

DId anyone get any photos of this? From what I on my way home from Miller Park on Sunday, there seemed to be little that changed, unless they did somethin I didnt see. SInce its only two miles from my House I didnt hear any large BOOMS of dynamite or anything,

DON

I just went by there today and they are takin it down with back hoes and cranes so I guess. I was wrong about them going to implode it. But it has actradded alot of people cause I saw a bunch of people watching them work on it just a little while ago. But now those signs have changed again the road is going to be closed next weekend and also the following weekend. and also they got fences up and baracdes to clsoe off traffic when then are taking down this big ol thing,
