Odd e-unit controls

I’ve got a Lionel 671 steam engine, and instead of a lever to control the e-unit, there is a wire in the cab that you plug into 1 of 2 sockets to control it. Can’t say I’ve ever seen that before. It also has a dimpled bulb in the smoke box(i’d assume the pellet sits in the dimple & burns/melts). Is this an early engine?

Thanks
Mark

Yes. 1946 model(1 year only on both features you mention)… use about a half of a smoke pellet in the bulb & you will be good to go. Let it cool & harden before handling/moving the loco off the track.

Hello Mark!

Your 671 is from 1946 which happens to be the first year of production for the 671( and later 681, 682 Turbines) The first versions are exactly like yours with a Light Bulb in the Smoke Generator to produce smoke! The 671 Turbine & 726 Berkshires along with the 773 Hudson are the only engines Lionel made in the postwar era that used a Plug-In Jack to control the Reverse Unit. Lionel considered them top of the line engines & did not want a E-Unit Lever sticking out like a sore thumb from the top of the engines. Take Care.
