Off to the Scrapper!!!!

Norfolk Southern Train pulling various railway equipment to be scrapped. Sorry to see the ex-Milwaukee E9 go. The white cables strung along the side of the train, I suspect are air brake bypass hoses for the cars with crappy or non-existent air lines for the brakes.

The first comment after the video explains that all of the equipment is owned by a museum and may eventually be restored. So it is NOT a scrap line.

Some of that equipment looks like it is in reasonable shape for display (like the bigger crane). But unless that museum has a sugar daddy, there is no way some of that stuff (like the E9) is going to be restored anytime soon.

All things considered, the equipment is not in ‘that bad’ of shape if NS is moving the equipment on its own wheels. That is a statement that the frames of the equipment are strong enough to withstand the forces that get generated within a train - especially a train that is being handled nominally without working air brakes except for the two gons at the rear of the train.

Restoration is a matter of time and money, nothing more and nothing less. If you have plenty of both anything that was once made by man can be remade.

They did this to get the SDP45 out to move it to Youngstown, I think.

Balt, your comment about the possibilities of restoration once the Will and the money are there reminds me of this comment about Poland from The Man in Seat61:

“Warsaw is like an old knife that’s had its blade and handle replaced, as it was almost totally destroyed in WW2 and has been 85% rebuilt…”

Of course there is George Washington’s original hammer - it has only had the handle replaced 4 times and the head replaced 3 times.

The E-unit is the RF&P E8 1002.

Last I heard, that group dropped the project. They did give a vague reply that “something is in the works”. shrugs
