Ogaugeoverlord - Cascade & Timber Trail Ry. --- Dow Chemical Great Stuff insulating foam.

Dear Lord over the Ogauge,

After reading your how-to-do article, Cascade & Timber Trail Ry., Part 4, I was wondering if you have any trouble using the Dow Chemical Great Stuff insulating foam. I find that when I use the foam and then put it down for a short time, the application tube becomes completely clogged and useless. It is expensive stuff to use, if you only get a cup’s worth of foam out of the can.

I sprayed it under my old truck. It rides quieter and warms up inside the cab better.

Buckeye - Why don’t you try spraying it on your keyboard. Zephyrx

Didn’t have any trouble I can recall, but Kent sometimes checks this on weekends, maybe he can add something.

Buckeye,

I’ve always had trouble with clogging too. Now I plan ahead so that I can use the entire can in one scenery building session.

Some people plan ahead and work fast. Then some are sloooow and have trouble. Yes, it will clog after a while. Also, wear laytex gloves or it will stick to your hands. I’ve used about 10 cans of it around the lake house. Fills holes, fills cracks and insulates pipes.

Great Stuff and it’s many knock offs will only be good for one session.

If you need to take a break, point the can straight up and then activate the can until it blows out all the foam in the tube and is just blowing propellant.

That will buy you some time , most of the time.

I’ll do that, just after I oil my TMCC CAB 1. (Look back in the archives of CTT to see the past photos.)

Thanks everyone for their reponses. I can’t wait to hear from Kent “The Bridge Builder” Johnson.

BTW, Bob I thought using peanuts under the masking tape was a great idea. [tup]

Peanuts? (insert Elephant joke here) [:)]

Where TOM (SPANKYBIRD) with that oil can?

LOL!!!

For all practical purposes, you really only get one work session out of each can of Great Stuff. I’ve tried to detach and clean the application tube from the nozzle and use it a second time, but I’ve found that the foam also continues to fill and clog the nozzle too! I’m sure some Chem. E. might have a solution for cleansing the nozzle and tube, but I generally don’t crack open a can until I have enough scenery to warrant the use of an entire can. One can (regular size) did the trick for the Cascade & Timber Trail Ry. project, but I imagine I’ll need 4-5 cans to finish the rock faces around the multiple tunnel openings on my home layout – then I can get back to building bridges and laying down roads for my weathered cars and trucks (coming in the May 2009 issue of CTT)! Kent

Fingernail polish remover … clean the nozzle with that . The nozzles on my cans I use are a nylon type material and it does’nt hurt them but cleans/unclogs them great .

PRETEND LIGHT BULB GOES OFF in Buckeye’s head and he says, “I wonder if the Dow’s website has any pertinent information?”

Wal-la!!

Can I store GREAT STUFF™ if I don’t use the whole can?

The GREAT STUFF™ foam straw will seal itself shut if left sitting for more than 2 hours after its last use. Inserting a pipe cleaner sprayed with oil lubricant into the applicator straw may prolong the life of the product. Plan ahead, identify and list all possible applications before opening can.

I think it said, “Plan ahead.” Folks in Ohio plan ahead. About 2 seconds ahead. [(-D]
