OHFX and Points

OK, so I was hanging around the Green River yard yesterday and is was Dead, nothing moving at all. But I kept hearing on the yard radio “Green River Crossover 1 West, Check points.” What does that mean, And can somone explain to me what points are? I have an idea but im not sure.

Also as I was leaving a unit train came through, Didn’t even stop in GR, It was all gons, with theels white lids, with the reporting marks OHFX and were only numbered in the 001-300 range, on them it said This car for radioactive material only, what was it hauling?

The points on a switch are just that–the pointed pieces of rail that move from side to side and actually determine which route the wheels should follow. If this switch was causing a problem, a visual check might be necessary to make sure that the point was solidly against the stock rail–a gap would be hazardous!

Those OHFX gondolas are probably hauling “dirty dirt” from a site near Fernald, Ohio, that’s being cleaned up.
